INFORMATION FOR PARENTS
How to support your child through The Complete Picture program
The Complete Picture program works best when the person doing it has space to be honest about who they actually are – not who they think they should be, or who you hope they’ll become.
Your role
You have two options:
- Option 1:
- Review each section together
- Discuss their responses
- Help them think through their answers
- Be a sounding board
- Option 2:
- Let them work independently
- Give them privacy to complete it alone
- Be available if they ask for input
- Respect their process
- Trust them to be honest
Either approach works. Choose what fits your child’s personality and your relationship.
The most important thing
They need to answer honestly, this framework only works with honest data. False answers lead to false conclusions.
Not:
- How they think they “should” answer
- What will make you proud
- What sounds impressive
- What their friends would say
But:
- What’s actually true for them
- How they really think and feel
- What genuinely interests them (not what “should” interest them)
- Who they are right now (not who they might become)
Is this program right for your child?
This program is for your child if:
- They’re in senior school and feeling pressure to “figure out their life”
- They’re not sure what careers would actually suit them
- They feel like they’re “not smart enough” because they struggle in school
- They know they’re capable of more but don’t know where they fit
- They want to understand themselves well enough to make strategic decisions
This program is NOT for your child if:
- They already have a clear career path and just need tactical job search help
- They’re looking for a quick answer or shortcut
- They’re not willing to do the self-reflection work
- They want someone else to tell them what to do
What to expect
Workload:
- 8 parts, released upfront
- Each part takes about an hour, depending on how deeply they engage
- Some sections require more thinking than others
The uncomfortable part:
- Part 4 (Family) asks questions about family resources, expectations, and dynamics
- This can feel intrusive or confronting
- It’s also one of the most important sections
- Your child’s starting point (family context) significantly impacts their career options
The empowering parts:
- Parts 5-6 (Attitudes & Habits) focus on what they can control
- These sections help them see how to build success regardless of their starting point
How to help
DO:
- Listen without judgment when they share insights
- Respect if they want to keep some answers private
- Acknowledge that this is their journey, not yours
DON’T:
- Push them toward careers you prefer
- Dismiss their interests as “unrealistic” out of hand
- Compare them to siblings or peers
Common parent concerns
- “What if they choose a career I don’t approve of?” This program helps them understand themselves, it doesn’t make career decisions for them. They’ll still need to research options, consider practical realities, and make choices. But those choices will be informed by genuine self-knowledge, not guesswork.
- “What if they’re not honest in their answers?” That’s their choice. And they’ll get results that don’t fit. The natural consequence of dishonest answers is a framework that doesn’t help and most young people figure this out quickly.
- “What if they discover they’re ‘not smart’?” That’s not possible. This program is built on the reality that there are 10+ types of intelligence. Everyone has strengths and tey’ll discover which types of intelligence they have – which is very different from “how smart they are.”
After they complete the program
They’ll have:
- A clear picture of their intelligence types, personality, interests, and strengths
- Understanding of how their family context and role impacts their options
- Insight into attitudes that help or hinder them
- An understanding of the role that their habits will play in their future success – and how to create some effective ones
- Tools for making informed career decisions
They won’t have:
- A single “perfect career” answer
- A guaranteed job
- A complete plan with every step mapped out
- This is self-discovery, not prescription and the goal is informed decision-making, not certainty.
