1. Intelligence Type and Career Fit

You’re probably smart in ways school never measured

Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences (first published in 1983’s Frames of Mind) recognises that people are intelligent in different ways. Traditional schooling typically only measures and values 2-3 of these, which means most people never see their real strengths.

The 9+1 intelligences:

  1. Verbal-Linguistic (words, reading, writing, speaking)
  2. Logical-Mathematical (numbers, reasoning, problem-solving)
  3. Visual-Spatial (images, space, visualisation, design)
  4. Bodily-Kinesthetic (physical movement, hands-on learning)
  5. Musical (rhythm, melody, sound, patterns)
  6. Interpersonal (understanding others, communication)
  7. Intrapersonal (self-awareness, independence)
  8. Naturalistic (nature, environment, patterns)
  9. Existential (big questions, meaning, philosophy)
  10. Organisational (planning, structuring, managing time and resources)*

*I’ve added organisational intelligence to Gardner’s original nine because it’s the superpower that enables bookkeepers, executive assistants, project managers, and engineers to tame chaos and work towards impossibly big goals, one methodical step at a time.

Why this matters for your career

Your intelligence type tells you what cognitive tools you have available. Two people with identical logical-mathematical and visual-spatial abilities might excel in different careers based on their other strengths:

  • Add strong interpersonal skills → Electrical project manager
  • Add high organisational intelligence → Electrical engineer
  • Add bodily-kinesthetic strength → Electrician or electrical technician

The problem

Most career advice focuses on the 2-3 intelligences school rewards, while ignoring the other types that might be your actual strengths.

The gap

Understanding your intelligence type without seeing how it interacts with your intelligence style, personality, interests, family patterns, habits, attitudes, and critical thinking skills gives you an incomplete picture.
